The burning of moxa is to increase Qi in the system and tonify the Yin state. There are 3 types of moxibustion: direct, indirect and needle moxa. In direct moxibustion, a small, cone-shaped amount of moxa is placed on top of an acupuncture point and burned. With indirect moxibustion, the moxa is placed over the point and lit, but is extinguished or removed before it burns the skin. Needle moxa combines acupuncture and moxa. Metal caps can be used to help hold the moxa on the needle.
