Cupping is an ancient Chinese method of relieving local congestion. A partial vacuum is created in cups placed on the skin either by means of heat or suction. Cupping
has also been found to affect the body up to four inches into the tissues, causing tissues to release toxins, activate the lymphatic system, clear colon blockages, help activate and clear
the veins, arteries and capillaries, activate the skin, clear stretch marks and improve varicose veins. It has also been used as a means to open the ‘meridians of the body.
The burning of moxa is to increase Qi in the system and tonify the Yin state. There are 3 types of moxibustion: direct, indirect and needle moxa. In direct moxibustion, a small,
cone-shaped amount of moxa is placed on top of an acupuncture point and burned. With indirect moxibustion, the moxa is placed over the point and lit, but is extinguished or removed
before it burns the skin. Needle moxa combines acupuncture and moxa. Metal caps can be used to help hold the moxa on the needle.
